Tampa Bay Buccaneers History
The team continued to play well for the next three years, finishing their 1982 season eligible for the playoffs, which they eventually lost to the Dallas Cowboys. With the loss of quarterback Doug Williams just before the 1983 season, the Buccaneers seemed to fall apart, with lackluster performances making the team one of the worst in the league for the rest of the 1980s, and most of the 1990s.
Finally, after the appointment of new head coach Tony Dungy in 1996, Tampa Bay Buccaneers games once again gave ticket holders something to cheer about. As Dungy restored order to the team and introduced his innovative defense strategies, the Buccaneers began winning games, giving fans hope that their chance at a Super Bowl win might be in the near future.
Sure enough, in 2002, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers made their first appearance in the Super Bowl, thanks in large part to the efforts of new head coach Jon Gruden, beating the Oakland Raiders 48-21 in Super Bowl XXXVII.
