James Taylor wrote and released one single in 1966, "Brighten Your Night with My Day" / "Night Owl," with a local New York band which ended quickly not even a year later. The following year Taylor moved to London and started submitting demo tapes to Peter Asher who worked for the Beatles’ Apple Record Label. By 1968 the James Taylor solo album was released in the U.K. and in the U.S. in 1969. James Taylor was the first outside artist signed to the The Beatles’ Apple Record Label. Unfortunately, Taylor was involved in a motorcycle accident, breaking both hands, which freed him from his Apple Records contract.

After recovering, Taylor then signed with Warner Bros. Records and moved his way to California. James Taylor introduced his acoustic guitar and style of music once again in 1970. And even though a majority of his songs were covers from old songs, he managed to work his way to the top of the charts starting with his breakthrough album “Sweet Baby James”, landing Taylor on the cover of Time Magazine as the new singer/songwriter trend in popular music.

From that point on, Taylor knocked out more top ten albums, “You’ve Got a Friend” (written by Carole King and went gold), “Long Ago and Far Away”, “Don’t Let Me Be Lonely Tonight”, “Mockingbird” (a duet with his former wife Carly Simon), “How Sweet It Is” (Marvin Gaye’s song), “Shower the People” and “Handy Man” which lead Taylor to his second Grammy for Best Pop Vocal Performance.

Taylor continued to tour frequently in the early 1980s, and 1990’s. Over the years, James Taylor has earned 40 gold, platinum and multi-platinum awards and 5 Grammy Awards. His first Greatest Hits album earned him the RIAA's elite Diamond Award and he has also been honored with the 1998 Century Award, for distinguished creative achievement. The year 2000 he was accepted into both the Rock 'n' Roll Hall of Fame and the prestigious Songwriter's Hall of Fame and The National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences selected James its MUSICARES Person of the Year.
